Brother Peter Sullivan is a monk at Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, MN. Growing up in a small town Mattituck on Long Island, he held various jobs in NY, from second grade teacher to owning a small lawn care/landscaping business, to managing a pet store, until moving to Minnesota in 2005 to become a monk. The death of his sister inspired him to draw his memories of her, ultimately coming to believe that his discovery of art was a gift from his sister, through her death. Now, Brother Peter doesn't know how he lived the first thirty-three years of his life without making art, and has not stopped making art since.
Brother Peter was initially interested in painting and drawing representationally, beginning with memories of his sister, and after moving to the monastery, he painted portraits of monks in the monastery retirement floor, displaying an uncanny ability for capturing an essence of the monk's spirit and personality.
Later, Brother Peter turned his attention to creating highly detailed abstract ink drawings, particularly enjoying working with ink because he was able to make finer lines than compared to paint, gaining the opportunity to get lost in the details of his ink drawings. These drawings are reminiscent of forms found in nature, lines, textures, patterns, shapes, which Brother Peter says remind him of God, and serve as a contemplative form of prayer for him. When he gets into the zone, he finds he can't help but to think about the wonder of God.
