At the heart of the 1500 year Benedictine spiritual tradition, "Worship and Work" succinctly describes the daily rhythm and spiritual dynamic of the monks of the Order of Saint Benedict.

A vocation to Worship, the first Work of the Benedictine monks is Worship. The Benedictine Work of Worship; the liturgy of the hours, daily Mass, and the ancient tradition of lectio divina, strives to serve to the spiritual need of the world and Church.

Daily Work among the Benedictine monks articulates and punctuates the spiritual life of the community, giving physical expression to the spiritual fruits of a life of Worship.

Nativity Relief Sculpture

This Nativity Relief Sculpture was created by Fr. John Meoska, OSB using the form created by Br. Peter Sullivan, OSB.  The original casting was created by Brother Reinhold Teutenberg, OSB from Maria Laach Abbey, Germany, in 1923.  This is a reproduction of that original with permission of Maria Laach Abbey.
       
This sculpture is created from a material called Hydrocal©, a gypsum product composed mainly of plaster and Portland cement. It measures approximately 11 inches high, 10 inches wide, 1 inch deep, and weighs approximately 3 lbs. 15 oz.
       
Shadow Frame

The frame for the Nativity Scene Relief Sculpture was crafted by Fr. John Meoska, OSB at Saint John’s Abbey Woodworking using wood from Saint John’s Arboretum.  The color models the ebonized oak common in the Abbey Church and throughout the Breuer monastery. 
       
The frame includes 23 karat gold leaf with an acrylic overcoat for protection.
